Echocardiography in Patchogue, NY
An echocardiogram (cardiac sonogram) uses ultrasound waves to evaluate the structure of your heart. This painless test creates images of the chambers in your heart, the walls, the valves, as well as the blood vessels.
An echo helps your cardiologist understand the following:
- Your heart's overall size, thickness, and shape
- Movement of your heart walls
- The pumping strength in your heart
- If the valves in your heart are functioning properly
- If your heart valves are too narrow
- Whether or not blood may be leaking backward through valves
- If there is extra amount of fluid around your heart
- Potential heart valve tumor or growth
- If there are blood clots, abnormal holes, or any other problems with your heart
Preparing for an Echocardiogram
For this simple and pain-free test, you don’t have to do any special preparation. You can eat and drink as you normally would, and no medicine is needed.
During Your Echocardiogram
When you arrive for your echocardiogram be sure to come a few minutes early so we can begin on time. A trained technician performs the echocardiogram.
You will lie down on a table while the technician attaches metal electrodes on your chest. These electrodes have wires that connect back to the echo machine. The room will be dark so that the technician can see the video monitor as clearly as possible.
The technician apply gel to your chest area to enable the sound waves to better pass through. At certain times during the echocardiogram, you may be asked to move certain ways or hold your breath to get a better picture.
The technician will pass the probe over your chest. The device will create sound waves that bounce off your heart and will send an echo back to the attached probe. These sound waves create the pictures that your doctor will review in detail later.
After the echo, one of our technicians will assist you with removing the gel and electrodes, and your cardiologists will soon speak with you after they review the pictures.
